After detailed investigations we proposed a process that firstly converts the data from the IBM host into a meta format by means of a printer driver and secondly provide them to the front-end.
It was important to us to create an interface where any front-end is able to access. In order to assure an user-friendly application we worked in close collaboration with the end-users.
We decided to take the interface format XML. The analysis of the provided data and the generation of the XML file we realized in Perl. The insertion of the menue images into the offerings was implemented with VBA (Visual Basic for Applications) and Microsoft™ Word. For this purpose the VBA macro accesses a file server where the corresponding images are stored. The ready-formatted offerings can optionally be further processed and printed directly on a color printer.
